TO ALTER A DIESEL ENGINE TO MAKE IT COMPATIBLE WITH JATROPHA OIL.

Jatropha curcas is an oil-yielding plant being considered a best potential feedstock for the production of biodiesel. Jatropha the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of 37%. The oil can be combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame, tested successfully as fuel for simple diesel engine. All properties of jatropha are comparable to diesel except the viscosity of jatropha which is very high.For this , we design a heat exchanger to reduce the viscosity of jatropha. We use dual tank system in our engine which consists of primary diesel tank and secondary jatropha oil tank. Both tanks are connected to a common fuel line through three-way valve having fuel filter installed after the tank to filter any contaminates present in the fuel. Fuel lining through Secondary tank then passes through copper lining wound on exhaust gas silencer before entering into the fuel pump to decrease the viscosity of jatropha up to certain limit.Typically we start our diesel engine on diesel fuel for 5 to 10 minutes so that the engine attains its working temperature. After it we switch our engine on secondary fuel i.e. Jatropha Oil through three way valve. The increased temperature of engine reduces the viscosity of jatropha so that it can be used in diesel engine as a working fuel.Before switching off our engine we again convert our engine from jatropha to diesel so that engine can easily be started on diesel next time on cold start and it will also flushes out jatropha from the lining and the fuel pump so that the jatropha don’t get freeze in lining and the process continues in the same manner.In the end we compare different engine parameters like efficiency,BHP,RPM etc. of both the fuels through graphs.
